8th Cinemalaya : FULL FORCE

I was introduced to this whole Cinemalaya thing when I was in 2nd year college when our prof in our film appreciation class asked us watch a film and do a review about it. Getting to experience Cinemalaya for the first time made me look forward in watching the competing films in the next Cinemalaya.

July 21, 2012 was the opening day of this year's Cinemalaya, with the late Mario O'Hara's Ang Babae sa Breakwater as the opening film.

Attended the opening with my colleagues.

I got to watch 4 competing films despite my busy schedule. I watched Aparisyon on a Sunday (July 23) and had an indie marathon on a Saturday (July 28). I was at the CCP from 12nn to 8pm to watch Diablo, Kalayaan and Ang Nawala. I really wanted to watch Posas and Kamera Obskura and Bwakaw but I can't really fit it in my schedule.

Some photos from my Sunday trip with Vlad, Ena and Jaimee:

I was with Vlad for our indie marathon. Diablo ang Kalayaan were great. We actually labeled it as "silent films" after watching Ang Nawawala. Especially Diablo. Too few dialogues, but the shots were very captivating. It won as the best film in the new breed category by the way. You wouldn't really understand the message of the film if you won't dig deeper its meaning. Kalayaan, on the other hand, won the best cinematography. I'm not regretting watching the films I mentioned because they were all really worth watching. But my favorite would be Ang Nawawala.

Ang Nawawala is not the regular indie film that exploits violence, sex, and poverty. Maybe one of the reasons why I like the film so much is because they featured pinoy bands (mostly indie), with typical teenager characters exploring and enjoying their city. I swear I was smiling the whole time I was watching this movie (not to mention the unlimited charms of the Roco twins). I really enjoyed it. Every scene, every dialogue moved me. And don't get me wrong, this isn't just about teenagers going out, having fun, watching bands play live. It's about relationship with the family, finding inspiration, getting back up again.

Yup, that's me, fan-girling over Felix Roco. Kilig all over my face. Ovaries almost exploded.

Really thankful for indie film makers for making these type of films. This is a proof that our movie industry is not dead. (Although mainstream's sorta-kinda killing it) loljk. Til the next Cinemalaya festival!
